The State of the Union (Movement)

UnionMaps, by WISERD, has produced this interactive map that shows union membership levels and the coverage of collective bargaining agreements across 406 local authority areas in Britain. While the figures/data doesn’t seem to go past 2022 it is still a useful tool to look at, especially when thinking about how we can promote trade unionism in North Staffordshire. ‘UnionMaps’ provides data based upon area of residence for the following measures:

Union density: The percentage of employees who are a trade union member.

Union presence: The percentage of employees who are a trade union member or who are employed at a workplace where others are members.

Union coverage: The percentage of employees who report that pay and conditions are agreed in negotiations between their employer and a trade union.

Collective pay agreement: The percentage of employees whose pay is set with reference to an agreement affecting more than one employee.

Propensity: The relative likelihood that employees will join a union after accounting for personal and job-related characteristics.

Before clicking on the link to the map, where do you think the local authority areas that make up North Staffordshire will rank in these measurements on union membership and coverage of collective bargaining agreements?

How did your perception of trade union membership match up with the data on the map?

Now Let's Map the Trade Union Movement in North Staffordshire

We all know that workplace mapping is an essential organising tool for union reps and activists, but we can also use mapping techniques to help Trades Council identify trade union branches in their area so that they we can make sure that the whole movement can play a part in our work.

Trades Council's work best when they have input and representation from a plurality of unions and workplaces/sectors. We have very active Trades Council's in North Staffordshire and East Staffordshire, but we can always do more.

That is why we have created a google form to help us make sure we are reaching out to every Trade Union branch in North Staffordshire.
